I decided to re-up the James Bond audio books because some of them were no longer working. Also, they were posted quite some time ago so people who have been here more recently might not be aware these were on the blog. Please check the original post for my descriptions and info on these files. Below are all the new links followed by a link to all of the James Bond posts.

Mr. Scruff- Trouser Jazz Mix (5 parts)

Here's something I found in my collection that I quite enjoyed. It's a 5 part mix of jazzy grooves with trip-hop, hip-hop and electronic influences. A real grab bag but a good set of mixes. Unfortunately I could not find much information on this mix. If anyone knows some more specifics on this mix, please feel to leave a comment and help us learn a bit more about this mix.

Various Artists- Egotrip's The Big Playback (2000)

It's hard to believe that is amazing compilation is almost 10 years old! This is one of the finest collections of old school classics ever put out. It wasn't just amazing in that it featured classic hip-hop but it featured some amazing songs that not every hip-hop fan would be really familiar with. Even today, this compilation still can enlighten some seasoned hip-hop listeners on lost classics from years gone by. If you don't immediately recognize the artists listed below in the track listings, then you'll want this for sure. If are an old school fan, you will also want to make sure this compilation is in your collection purely because it gives that classic hip-hop sound without running through the usual suspects when it comes to classic hip-hop comps. A must-have and a truly legendary compilation. Enjoy!!!!

Various Artists- Kings of Funk (2CD) (2005)

Here's a nice compilation from veteran funk compiler Keb Darge and Wu-Tang member and super producer RZA. I guarantee a few of these you won't have heard unless you know this album already. Keb Darge is always on the front end of crate digging and always supplies you with old and new funk classics. RZA's CD is more traditional but it features a great selection of tracks as well. Definitely a nice listen for the funk fans and a welcome addition to any hip-hop collection. Enjoy!!!

Arabian Prince- Innovative Life: The Anthology 1984-1989 (2008)

Without question, Arabian Prince was indeed an innovator. He was a master of the Electro sound and one of the pioneers of the genre. I read an article with Arabian Prince and Egyptian Lover in an issue of Wax Poetics not too long ago about how they came up, crossed paths and helped create an important sound in the world of hip-hop. You should track that down if you have a chance, it's a very good interview. I remember coming across Arabian Prince when I picked up his N.W.A. era solo project on a trip to the U.S. back in 1989. Over the next few years I caught up on his previous work and also noticed that Panic Zone on the N.W.A. and the Posse album was his track. That still is one of the best tracks on any N.W.A. release. Later on, when I got into the Electro music and learned more about it, it became clear that Situation Hot was one of the most important tracks in the Electro history. The remainder of this CD features some older and some newer highlights from his recording career. Some of you may not be as familiar with Arabian Prince so this anthology is a good way to gauge if you want to go out and start looking to buy some of his releases. Enjoy this compilation of classics from a hip-hop pioneer!!!!

R.I.P. Michael Jackson

Sad, sad news. Michael Jackson has passed away earlier today and it's hard to believe. His legacy may, in some respects, be tarnished by his personal life. However, on the music side of things, he was one of the true legends of our time. Likely, a legend of all-time as well. I don't think I ever met anyone that didn't have a soft spot for his music whether it was his contributions to the Jackson 5 or throughout his solo career. He will be missed but at least we have a massive catalog of music to remember him by and a pile of great music videos as well. R.I.P. to an icon.

Just checking with the masses if anyone knows of a torrent site that has the "live" segments of this series of BBUK? I'm getting the regular episodes from a great private torrent site but they have not been able to keep up with the live episodes. I'd like to check these out so if anyone is grabbing these can you drop me an e-mail at thesupremeunknown@gmail.com and spare me an invite if needed. Thanks!!!

1999 DMC World DJ Championships (video)

Barry comes in for the triple play on the videos with this one! I got a bunch more stuff that Barry sent me so the videos will be hot and heavy for a little bit. Save some room on those drives! Or you can be like me and buy a new 1TB external (which gives me 2.5 TB total drive space on three computers and three external drives). Normally I like to upload video straight up but the next few of these will be .rars and you can get at 'em with this free program (IZarc). Easy to set up and easy to use. Just remember to download all files into the same folder and right-click on the first file and select IZarc->Extract here and that's it. Enjoy this cause it's some great turntablism and also historic type stuff too given that it is already a decade old!!!!

1997 DMC World DJ Championships (video)

Thanks to Barry for the links on these. I've uploaded them to my own account to make sure they stay active. Normally I like to upload video straight up but the next few of these will be .rars and you can get at 'em with this free program (IZarc). Easy to set up and easy to use. Just remember to download all files into the same folder and right-click on the first file and select IZarc->Extract here and that's it.

This is a classic as far as Canadians are concerned, except for Tony Prince's butchering of the champ's name (which would later happen again). Don't sleep on DJ Akakabe from Japan and DJ Tommy from Hong Kong and enjoy Crazy B (Birdy Nam Nam) in one of his numerous appearances at the DMCs. I think only Red Alert and Tony Prince have been to more DMC events than Crazy B. It's a great watch and probably one you'll watch a few times at least. Enjoy!!!!

Art Bell- Interview with Dr. Michio Kaku- August 22nd, 1997

Well, the poll results showed a slim majority for those in favour or neutral towards this content. At the same time, the number of people responding positively towards the content was enough for me to go ahead and add some of these great shows. Now, a good number of you will know Art Bell for having some pretty bizarre shows and guests. That's not untrue, but he also has had some interesting and very worthwhile guests. This show features a lengthy interview with an accomplished and well-respected theoretical physicist, Dr. Michio Kaku. You can read up more on Dr. Kaku below on his wikipedia listing. Most recently, Dr. Kaku appeared as a regular contributor on the History channel's The Universe TV series, which is a great watch by the way. He also is hosting radio programs on a regular basis. This show is thoroughly interesting as they cover topics such as Type 0, 1, 2 and 3 civilizations, String Theory and time travel. The even better thing is that Dr. Kaku has an extraordinary ability to bring these deeply complex ideas into a much less complex explanation that the average, non-physics enthusiast can understand and appreciate. I highly recommend this for anyone looking to listen to something unique or help pass time during your daily commute. I even recommend this for those who have doubts about the validity of listening to something that is at times fantastical. All of these Art Bell files will be on Mediafire, so they are free to get all the time and the files even like this one at 3 hours in length is only 44 MB. I have GBs of these shows so please let me know if you enjoy this and would like to hear more. Enjoy!!!

Deeper and deeper and still deeper

**Thanks to the community for stepping up and getting me a link for Volume 1 which you will find below!!! Thanks MPM!!! If you uploaded it to a different site still e-mail me the link anyway.

Unfortunately on this one, the first in this series has the CD missing from the case and so I will have to follow-up on that later. Strikes me as though Barry might have that one sitting in his collection so send me a message if you have it and can upload it for the masses. The Deep Concentration series was an important compilation series and for the first three volumes it ran very similar to ROTDJ. The fourth in the series ended up being a dedication to the b-boys so it has more lyrical hip-hop on there than the cut-ups on Volumes 1-3. You'll find all the names you'd expect from the turntablism genre and a few new names that end up showing and proving quite well throughout the series. This is a great series and as soon as I track down part 1 I will post it and include a link on here for future visitors. Enjoy!!!!

Ebony Rhythm Band- Soul Heart Transplant: The Lamp Sessions (2004) + bonus

Here's a nice funk treat from the reissue side of things. This band is one of many of late who's music has been rediscovered by a select group of labels that aim to show us that no matter how much you dig, there's still some amazing music yet to be had. I had featured a couple of songs by this group in my Breakonomics series and they still are some of my favourite tracks after dozens upon dozens of listens. Some of the tracks on this CD were new to me and, as expected, the quality remained very high. If I was to describe their sound it would be very much a fusion of soul with heavier funk rhythms. It has a harder sound than the 60's soul music but clearly pays homage to it in terms of melody and the way they use the organ. A little like Booker T & the M.G.'s with The Meters in there if you know what I mean. Definitely well worth your listening time. As a bonus I've included the Soul Heart Transplant/ Drugs Ain't Cool 12". Enjoy!!!!

Various Artists- Ghana Soundz (2004)

Here's a cool comp of afro-beat and funk and fusion. It's funk with a twist. Often times the lyrics are far more social/ political than your average funk tunes and that's a good thing. The music is pretty uptempo on this one so you won't be feeling like sitting down to check this CD out. There's a follow-up to this CD but I have not yet picked it up. I think probably by the end of August, I'll be able to get a new batch of CDs in. Been awhile since I've been able to afford to do that and I definitely look forward to it because there's literally thousands of songs I haven't heard that I need to hear. This might be a bit of a change-up for some of you as far as your listening tastes go but I think if you give this a good, honest listen you will broaden your horizons and become more keen to check out some stuff you might not otherwise have. If you want a good example, the best song on this CD is easily Self Reliance. You get it all in one amazing track with distant echoes of the Go-Go genre. Enjoy!!!!

WAR- Anthology (2 CD) (1994)

This one, although amazing, might not catch too many of you off guard. Those of us who are heavy into funk know that WAR is one of the most important groups of the genre. Recently my brother was able to see them in concert and got this autographed. As you can see by the track listing below, the majority of the important tracks are here. The most noticeable exception being Heartbeat which Rob Swift made very memorable many years ago. As far as anthologies go, this one gets an A+. There's not overly much you're missing out on as a casual listener if you immerse yourself into this 2-disc set. A guaranteed to enjoy type thing so get on it already!!!!

Two new contests

Finally, we have a couple of new contests for those with artistic talent!!!!

The first contest is to create a new banner (jpeg) for the TEE. If you've been to TEE long enough you know that the key elements are hip-hop and funk with a heavy emphasis on breaks and turntablism. There's also some graffiti stuff on here and some odds and ends such as audio books and more. So keep those things in mind. It's not that they should all be there but it should be reflective of the content. The contest will be decided with a public poll which will take place for 7 days after the final entry date. You can submit more than one banner design for this contest. The winner of this contest will have their banner design featured on the blog for the foreseeable future. The winner will also receive a multi-CD pack of their choosing from one of my favourite hip-hop music sites. Three runner-ups will receive a special TEE mini-prize pack. This contest is open and will close on June 30th. Send your entries to thesupremeunknown@gmail.com and use "BANNER" in the subject line. You can modify your entry at any time prior to June 30th but be sure to let me know that you are substituting a new entry for a previous one.

The second contest is to create a T-shirt design (jpeg) for TEE. The image resolution should be 200 pix/in or higher and the image should be 10" x 10" and will appear on a white T-shirt. You can submit more than one image for the contest. Be mindful to use at least some of the elements of the blog's content and focus in your designs. The contest will be decided by a public poll which will take place for 7 days after the final entry date. The winner will receive 5 t-shirts with the winning design (sizes of their choosing) and will have their design remain at TEE's online shop (which is still undergoing construction at this time) for anyone else to purchase. The winner will also receive a special membership to a hip-hop label's fan club which includes music, stickers, download access, discounts and a t-shirt. Three runner-ups will receive 1 t-shirt (size of their choosing) with their design and a selection from TEE's mini prizes. This contest is open and closes on June 30th. Send your entries to thesupremeunknown@gmail.com and use "T-shirt" in the subject line. You can modify your entry at any time prior to June 30th but be sure to let me know that you are substituting a new entry for a previous one.

Premiere Play Presents - LOU - excLOUsiv Productions

Not too long ago, I got an e-mail from Lou out in Edmonton, Alberta (Canada). He had a project he had finished up and wanted to give it some exposure and asked if I wouldn't mind giving the OK and post it on the blog. Well, I give it more than an OK. It's a solid series of instrumental tracks. The tracks are diverse, multi-layered and show some real signs of competence and creativity in beat making. You should definitely take the time to have listen to this project and let him know if the comments if you are liking what you're hearing. Below is a brief excerpt from the e-mail request he sent me. Enjoy!!!!

Lou said: I am a beatmaker and I have been working on my 1st project, which is meant to introduce myself and my music to the Hip Hop world. The album is on-line only for the time being. It's a free download, promo only. I'm not selling it. It's a gift to the Hip Hop world. I reside in Edmonton, Alberta. I've been making beats for about 4 years or so. It's my hobby and passion.

Bottom Brick spotlight

Previously on the blog, Home Audio made me aware of a group that was coming up. That group was Advanced Placement and you can still check that post out here. Home Audio just let me know now of another associated group (featuring the guys from Advanced Placement) called, Bottom Brick. I've manged to check these out and there are plenty good tracks on here and a few real standouts. They've also managed to pull up some impressive underground guest spots from well-known emcees Blueprint (Soul Position) and Illogic. The main standouts of all the tracks right now are "Rockit", "Cadillac Rap" and "Anthropology". Big thanks to all these guys for keeping hip-hop going in the right direction and for allowing me to post it up for the masses. Stay tuned for another spotlight tomorrow but enjoy this in between and beyond!!!!

Bottom Brick Bio:

With the perpetual decline of consciousness in the music industry today, Bottom Brick stands as a Hip Hop crew willing to push for a change. The world of Hip Hop and its creative spirit is being overshadowed by a mundane, uninspiring blend of bland music. Bottom Brick hopes to emerge from behind that shadow and regain a sense of integrity that once was the appeal to so many musicians and fans alike.

Formed in early 2006, the three-member crew merged together after years of independent solo careers. With many of the same musical influences, ranging from Hip-Hop to Classic Rock, the band members grew extremely close in an abridged amount of time. Their vast musical abilities extend anywhere from turntablism and production to emceeing and engineering. In addition to managing themselves, Bottom Brick handles all of their own promotion. They also create their own artwork as well as record, mix and master all their albums in their own studio dubbed, “The Brick House”. With all of this group’s attributes and separate skills, these three musicians embrace the fact they can rely on themselves to bring their passion to the music business.

In an industry constantly changing and evolving, here is a crew who offers some consistency in an otherwise chaotic existence. The simplicity of their message is proof of their worth. At a time when originality is becoming increasingly scarcer, the idea of “relaying the foundation” lifts Bottom Brick up into a class of their own.

The Shrine To The Funky Drummer

My man Avocado Kid has come up with a pretty cool idea. A lot of you frequent visitors to hip-hop blogs will probably recognize his name cause he's always generous with the comments! AK has got a bit of a favour to ask of the frequent turntablism and funk visitors. Rather than lay it out for you, I'll just post what he passed along to me.

Avocado Kid said: Hey, I'm a long time follower/fan of your blog. I sometimes comment as avocado kid. As a total addict of music blogs I totally appreciate the niche you fill so well - I've been a huge fan of turntablism since I saw kid koala and the x-men rock it back in the mid 90s.

Anyway, I'm also a video and remix artist myself, and I'm working right now on an art piece that I'm tentatively titling "The Shrine to the Funky Drummer" that's all about sampling, funk, and DJing.

I thought you would be a good person to ask: I'm trying to hunt down any video clips I can find that depict someone cutting up the funky drummer, sampling it, or better yet b-boying to that break. Can you think of any dmc routines that use it? Or other classic videos?

So far I have a nice audio recording of grandmaster flash cutting it up with Kurtis Blow, and videos from YouTube of rob swift teaching how to beat juggle using the funky drummer. If you can think of any others, I would greatly appreciate it!

If you're curious about the project there's a rough version of a piece of what I'm working on posted here:
http://www.vimeo.com/4841638

Thanks a lot for your help!

Check it out most definitely and if you have some suggestions, post them in the comments. This is one of those things where you know it's been done but trying to place the who and on what mix or at what event is a little trickier and a few hundred heads are better than one. Also, there will be some stuff this weekend from some visitors to the blog. I have finally sorted my job business after almost 5 weeks of limbo so things are looking up and that only means more contests and more goodies to give away to the loyal visitors.

The logo design contest will be announced this weekend as well. It was delayed due to the fact that I didn't know what I could offer for prizes since the finances have been rough. I didn't want to commit my power bill to prizes by accident. But, now we're cool and the prize packages will be cool and you'll have plenty of time to get entries in since this is effectively pro bono work and I don't want you avoiding your daily routines just to get an entry in.

Ultramagnetic MC's- The Four Horsemen (1993) + bonus

This one is going out to Haroon. He had said previously he prefers this release and Funk Your Head Up over Critical Beatdown. I still prefer their debut myself but you can't argue that the quality of the subsequent releases is substantially less than their debut. This is still a great album, as Haroon stated, and for a group to be able to drop three classic albums consecutively is pretty amazing. They just had a way of finding that sound hip-hop fans want and with the steady reliability of Ced Gee and the creativity of Kool Keith, it didn't seem to matter what the track was about. It almost always came out dope. I've included a couple of CD singles from this album as a bonus. It gets you a few instrumentals and remixes to enjoy besides the album itself. I know a lot of blogs have the older singles available but I haven't seen these two often and they are both great tracks and the b-sides are solid as well. Enjoy!!!

3 from J Rocc...

There's probably not enough you can say about J Rocc. He's long been one of the top turntablists in the world. As far as turntablists go he's also rather prolific in terms of the number of mixes he has released over the years. His style is broad and very adaptable to different styles of music. His funk mixes are clean with an appropriate amount of turntablist tricks and techniques, his hip-hop mixes are more spectacular and rooted in classics and finally his battle skills are jaw-dropping. Anything he works with has a very good chance of coming out sounding better than the original which makes his mixes some of the very best to listen to. There's a lot of good turntablists out there but when they become indiscriminate as to what they are willing to play, there's often no set of skills that can recover a commercially oriented, popish mixtape. J Rocc is discerning enough never to venture down that route and always proves reliable in his music selection regardless of the genre or the era. You cannot go wrong with these three gems below. Enjoy!!!!
